AACT Culinary Students Help Raise Money for Hurricane Relief Efforts

Picture
On Thursday, September 21st, the American Culinary Foundation High Sierra Chef’s Association hosted a fundraiser dinner to support relief efforts for those affected by this year’s devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean.  To assist with this event, the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology (AACT) sent a team of 9 students from their school’s Culinary Academy.

AACT’s students, led by instructor Chef Fred Wright, helped out with the event’s setup, dishing plates and table service, as well as cleanup and breakdown.  Aside from allowing them to directly apply their skills to benefit others, Chef Wright’s culinary students were also able to work and interact with our region’s local chefs and groups including the American Culinary Foundation (ACF), BJ’s Barbeque, Renown and the VA Hospital, Brother’s BBQ, and Chefs Michelle Palmer and Karl Peters.

AACT is an accredited American Culinary Foundation (ACF) institution, the only accredited school in the state of Nevada, and one of only 10 such schools on the west coast.  As a result, AACT regularly partners with the ACF in supporting its events and giving back to the community.

Developed from start to finish over the course of just two weeks, the evening raised more than $5,000, with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross and Mercy’s Chef.  From this event AACT was grateful to receive from the ACF the donation of a specialized piece of cooking equipment called the “Control Freak,” in addition to the opportunity for its students to put their learning into practice.  When asked about her favorite part of the event, freshman culinary student Ann Edano said, “I liked working with local chefs.  I’ve always wanted to be a head chef or own a restaurant, but after getting to talk to some of them I now want to do catering.”  Freshman Esperanza Lopez also had a positive experience, saying “it was eye opening for catering, and to see how it works.  It was nice experience to have as a culinary student of AACT.  Getting your degree is important, but in culinary it’s nice to also have experience under my belt."
